Basking too much???????

copyleftpenguin Feb 02, 2004 05:04 PM

Hey, how's it going? Yesterday I purchased a scoprion mud turtle and I have a major question... I am under the impression that they are mostly bottom dwellers and bask every now and then. Well, my little champ basks all the time (it seems like at least half the day... maybe even more). Is this a problem? I keep the water temp at about 82 degrees. The basking heat is about 100 degrees. I have one theory... The place from where I purchased my turtle from is in the process of moving. The pool that they had her in didn't have any basking heat and had a basking spot that was occupied buy bigger turtles. Maybe her body needs to dry a bit and needs the heat so much that she is making up for it. I realize they typically have instincts that help it maintain its health and well being. Maybe this is one of them? Who knows. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I am new to mud turtles and figured despite all of my reading, there is something that I do not know. Thank you for your time. Take care.

Hey,
Well Muds are known to be more terrestrial then Musks and other "bottom dwellers." The water temp sounds good if its a hatchling. If its an adult I would keep the water at about 75-78. The basking area seems pretty hot. I would keep the basking area temp around 90. As long has he's showing no signs of illness, like breathing through his mouth, I would not be worried.
Good Luck with you new turt. . .
