Sickness precautions

ghostwolf Feb 02, 2004 05:54 PM

Ok a few of my leos became sick in the past week. The symptoms are runny greenish stools and some loss of appetite, some regurging. Sounds like coccidia but my vet appointment is not until next week so until then I am taking some measures to prevent the sckness from spreading. These incluse disposing of any and all feeder insects, cleaning the enclosure thoroughly every day, fresh food and water every day, and disposal of all of my gutload material. Is there anything else anyone would like to suggest? Thanks.

In addition, you should separate those leos who are symptomatic - preferably in a different room altogether. If you can't put them in another room, move them far apart physically as possible and have the healthy ones on a higher shelf if you can.

Take care of your healthy leos first and then take care of the others. Use disposeable gloves (shouldn't be more than $8 for a box of 100, and often half that). Don't allow anything - food dishes, etc to go from the sick ones to the clean ones.

Also if you have any leos on the floor move 'em at least a few inches higher... ground level is covered with germs. Green stool can be caused by bacterial infections as well as protazoan .. talk to your vet about what to clean cages with. A mild bleach solution is very effective for almost everything ... but a very few things are resistant to bleach while susceptible to alcohol based disinfectants. Coccidia is one of those.

Good luck to you, jump on it now (as you are doing) and hopefully you'll have it fully contained and treated quickly.

Sounds like it could be a bacterial infection, actually, if the stools are green. Do they smell like ammonia?

Not like ammonia, but they have a very foul smell.

You might want to bring in a fresh stool sample. Ideally it would be from that same day, but as long as it isn't dried out they can do a fecal float. Collect a sample from the day before to be on the safe side, and keep it in a tight container in the refrigerator... perhaps in plastic wrap inside a disposeable plastic container. Do not freeze the sample as that can cause false negative results.

Good luck, please let us know how it goes.
