how long is poo good for to get an acurate reading. Can I use a sample from the cage if it is not "fresh"?

If it is already hard it is best not to use it and wait for a fresh one. The ova become dessicated and you cannot see them. You can put a fresh sample in saline or sterile water and keep it in the fridge if you can not get the fecal done right away.
