Unfortunetly ..mine don't have table manners either! If I'm not mistaken.. yours is an adult? Yes they will ingest some sand. Mine always do. They will "Pass" it like ruffage. Keep in mind they will eat from the ground as well as climb trees (to get to their favorite blooms) in their native habitat. I wouldn't be overly concerned about his messiness.

I use paper plates to feed mine. That gives them a little more room to kick it around before they get it in the substrate - maybe a wider flatter dish would help. I also tried different spots in the cage. Some places they seem to use as a freeway and stomp thru lunch all the time. Where I have it now, they only seem to bother it when they're actually eating. Unless, of course, they're running away from me.
