Tiger Salamanders

warmouse4000 Feb 02, 2004 10:26 PM

I was just wondering if anyone could give me some suggestion on when and where in north west Indiana i could see these guys in the wild. In my area i have seen multiple species of frog and believe it or not in my urban area a box turtle(I'm originally from Chicago so any herps i see in the wild surprise me)but never any salamanders and newts. I know tigers and most salamander come out of hibernation in late winter early spring, but i still haven't been able to see them. Any help would be appreciated.

In SE Wisconsin, I have the most luck from late August through mid-October. I find them under logs and debris near their breeding ponds. Most of them have likely just recently changed from the larval stage. Good luck.

Hello,

I am 14 and from the Chicago area and I have found multiple species of salamanders. They are very easy to find in the spring in big numbers in areas with vernal pools. I find TONS of Tigers and Bluespots from February-April. If you would like I could give you some spots here in DuPage county with areas to find them. Also I know areas to find fox snakes, plains and eastern garters, dekays, ect.

Mike

Where in the chicago area? I'm originally from the northwest side of chicago. I would love to know some places around there where i can see those animals. In my original neighborhood its kind of hard to access areas that contain animals like that. Plus its so urbanized there are very few of them to begin with.
