Hey all, my Cal king who laid a gorgeous clutch on 4/21 is starting to look HUGE again. I wondered, since she didn't lose much weight, if she would double clutch. I introduced her to the male, but he was getting ready to go blue. She Musked as soon as he was in the cage, and her cloaca seemed to get very swelled up. He wasn't interested. Then I tried my other, untried male, and he didn't seem to know what to do though she seemed receptive. In neither case did the male "hook up" with the female. BUT, she's starting to get huge. She had her post lay shed, has been eating a healthy amount but not being overfed. And when I picked her up today she's larger than she was the last time she had 8 eggs! I keep expecting her to go blue due to this seemingly rapid size gain. Today she seemed to have increased tremendously. My plan is to prepare a new egg-laying area for her just in case she feels like laying some more eggs. But this is her first season, her other clutch is due to hatch in two to four weeks. I just didn't think she was likely to double clutch without being bred again. The first clutch had no slugs, and she was bred twice, both times for LOOOONNNNNNGGGG times. (Five hours hooked up with the male the first time, 9 hours the second time). After she laid the eggs she was slender by not emaciated, and it was obvious she had no retained eggs. Just curious about experiences others have had. Not that I'll MIND if she decides to have a second clutch, but I just hope she's not wasting all of her energy on a clutch full of duds. If anyone has had their king double clutch, what would be the time frame I would expect for her to lay this second clutch? As far as I could tell she was textbook normal as to her pre-ovulation shed, her pre-lay shed, and her post-lay shed. I'm just wondering if she's read that textbook, what it told her about her next laying time.
