What uroplatus have I got?

uromastyx Feb 03, 2004 12:06 PM

Hi, I keep Henkels, Phants, Ebans and Sikorae. I sent for a new WC female sikorae from a dealer, I asked for a true sikorae (black mouth) and when it came it had a pink mouth, was about another two inches bigger than my male and does not have rough skin. It looks very similar to my female henkeli in colour but the head shape isn't right. I was wondering if sikorae sameti could look like this? I've put her in with the male sikorae, as I didn't have another viv set up in. He seems to like her, he dispays at her with his tail, but she ignores him. I've got the Uroplatus book by Sacha Svatek which does not show any pictures resembling the gecko. Any ideas? I was wondering if it was a new species sent in by accident?

In the book from Svatek you will find the subspecie Diego Henkeli (It is a Sikorae-subspecie) which is not yet described. I know a breeder in germany. Perhaps you could ask him how his animals look? It sounds possible with Diego, I think.

Do you have the guys e-mail? I really want to know what she is, I know there isn't much chance of getting her a mate but I could try if I knew what she was!

If you can describe the gecko better, it will help. Size is often not the best way to tell the species apart, but it seems to be the way importers and dealer differentiate them. I've received both henkeli and fimbriatus juveniles when ordering sikorae and I picked up a nice male fimbriatus being sold as henkeli.

Things to look at are eye color/pattern at night. Presence of tubercles at the rear corners of the head, shape of the tail tip, presence or absence of dermal fringe in the "armpit" area (this one is important). If you post a pic or send one to me at geckomeister@eastlink.ca I may be able to help.

I will try and e-mail you a picture of the little girl. Unfortunatly she has a regen tail so it doen't look normal. I think she has a fringe all around her body (I'm at uni at the moment so I'll check when I get back). She has very dark brown eyes during the day, but again, I'll check on a night.
