Russian Tortoise

lemonhead Feb 03, 2004 03:18 PM

Hello,

Over the last weekend, I took in a russian tortoise. This is my first tortoise (I usually only deal with snakes & lizards), so I do not know much about them. To my great suprise this morning, I found that she had laid a clutch of 3 eggs. My question is this, do these animals only lay eggs when they have mated or do they lay eggs whether or not they have mated (like an Iguana). I have collected the eggs and put them in an incubator just in case. I would appreciate any help

How big is the female that laid the eggs?
Many tortoises can and do lay eggs without being around a male.
Did the tortoise nest?
If it is WC it is possible that it could retain sperm and the eggs could be fertile.

The female is large (from what I have read anyway, she is 8.5" from the tip of her head to her vent. I did contact the person I took her in from, and they say that she was kept with other tortoises (although smaller than her). From all the reading I have been doing online, these look like viable eggs, so I am operating under the assumption that they are. Thanks for all the replies. I will post pictures of the hatchlings (if they in fact hatch).

Wow! How lucky can you get? Good thing you have an incubator handy. I really would like you to post follow-up and let us know if they are fertile and if they hatch. Good luck.
