Crested Gecko Shedding Problems...HELP!!!

buzzoff Feb 03, 2004 07:20 PM

Hello,
I already asked this question in the other gecko forum, but I really only got one response and it hasnt worked too well.

I've got a crested gecko thats about 6 months old or so now and he's shed a couple times, but this time hes having problems. Hes only taken the skin off his head and the rest of him is just covered in dead skin. I'm afraid to do it myself because of the tail dropping issues these geckos have. I've tried everything as well. I raised the humidity, I've given him branches and rocks and everything else possible to rub on, and he even has a dish of water to soak in. He's just being really difficult! Is there anything I can do besides manually taking his skin off? I tried manually taking his skin off and got some of it, but he developed a little band around his tail like he was about to pinch it off, so I put him back in his cage to let him chill out again. Im really really worried about him dropping his tail. Also, his little toes are curling up because the skin is too tight on him now. Please help! Thank you for your help everyone. I really cant help but worry about the baby of the family..

You're going to need to get the skin off the toes...better to lose the tail than the toes, IMO. You may have to force him to soak for a while to help loosen the skin. You could try soaking in glycerin instead of water as well.

Very true about the toes..:..Hmm..I dont know where I could get Glycerin other than in soaps...Soaps dont sound like a good idea to me though..I tried soaking him in warm water, hes just not interested in shedding...It's awful!
