What age/size will female monitors....

Lucien Feb 03, 2004 07:31 PM

in good health start producing infertile ova? I'm just wondering so I can keep a watch for it. I'm not 100% certain my Sav is actually a female but if she is I want to know what to watch for so I can prepare for the eventuality that it may happen and at what age/size it may happen.

The first time it didnt hit me as to what happened until it was over and months later when she did it again, then she became egg bound and did not absorb them or lay them, bad nesting, I used some organic top soil I bought from a home improvement place (a couple hundred lbs of it). Be prepared ahead of time, much ahead as I tried to correct the dirt after the cycle started and she wouldnt lay, surgery was needed to save her. I didnt want to wait and risk her life so she was x-rayed at 3 weeks then almost 4 weeks she had the surgery, over 40 eggs.
Bosc are known to produce alot of eggs and most probably produce eggs earlier in age than an albig. Sobek was 8 months old in the first cycle and the second was at 18 months old. Both corresponded to a few days after being moved into a new bigger cage with deep substrate.

Thanks for the info.. I'm just trying to watch for it really... because I don't want to have to take "her" into the vet just to be sexed. The vet is a 3 hr drive from here.. and I've never tried any other way and am not comfortable with the idea of doing so without guidance (IE popping etc) a few people looked at Kiros and said it looked female but I know thats not as reliable... I still want to be prepared in case. "She" is now.. 10 months old give or take. and right at 2.5 ft.

I highly recommend you purchase Daniel and Ravi's book on Savannah monitors. It has stacks of information that you'd find helpful.

Daniel mentions (wild) females being able to reproduce at a much smaller size than your monitor.

I'll do that as soon as I can.. we just totalled our car so that takes priority over books at the moment... Its a good idea though. I've been meaning to get it but other things keep cropping up. *shrugs* This is a picture of her/him about 2 months ago...
