Introducing a new mouse

khalliaar Feb 03, 2004 08:39 PM

I introduced the first male to my 2 females today. They live at school so I didnt' have too much time to introduce them slowly. I took all the furniture out of their tank, then put the 2 females into the small container I kept the male in. After about 20 minutes in there I put them all in the tank. The larger female became really dominant and threatened the young male. I pulled her out and let the one female and the male stay in the tank together for several hours while the mean female was in her own small container. After I put her back in she was a lot better and only hissed a little when he went into her hide box but she even stopped that and when I left them all three were laying comfortable in one hide. My question is, is there a chance of the female reverting back to the dominant behaviour and attacking him in the night? After he had been in there and urinated some she seemed to realize that he was ok. Also, the female couldn't have been gravid, but thanks for the suggestion. Both my females weigh about 32 grams, does this seem like too much? Thanks for reading this thing.

I have heard it is better to introduce the females into the males cage than the other way around. Put the male into the cage first (after it's clean of course) then about 15 minutes later or longer, introduce the females. Otherwise, the females would think the male is an intruder and could attack him, especially if they are not currently in season.
