Incubating Gecko Eggs

eliotm Jun 07, 2003 08:35 PM

Hey all,

I ordered a Hovabator a few weeks ago for some eggs I have. I feel this is a general/common incubator, so I hope you can help me with these pretty simple questions I have after reading the instructions that came with it.

The manual said that the eggs must be turned twice a day. This was in reference to bird eggs. Is this true of gecko eggs also? If so, how often should I turn them?

Also, the manual details how to keep ambient humidity up by adding water to a storage area below the level of the eggs. I was always told to place the eggs on top of a layer of vermiculite and water. Is the vermiculite method a preferred? Do I then not need to add water to the bottom of the incubator?

Thanks a bunch, Eliot

DONT TURN THE EGGS, they will drown. the eggs should be half buried in the vermiculite or in perlite, and it's always a good idea to add a cup of water in the incubator, just to add a little more humidity. what species are you dealing with?

I have a pair of P. m. grandis. Thanks very much for the help. These were the answers I was looking for.

Its my understanding that even leting an egg roll over by mistake could jeopardize the hatch of that egg. A very good freind of mine breeds high end knobtails and he goes as far as to put a little mark on the top of the egg before moveing it from where it was laid to his incubator so he can watch the mark and be sure it doesn't ever get turned at all.
