Copperhead breeding question

magicman Feb 03, 2004 09:57 PM

What can anyone tell me about breeding broadbands? I have kept non-vens all my life, and about a year ago, made the next step into venomous with a pair of broadbands, but in all that time I've never attempted to breed anything. Everything I've read about copperheads says that mating does not take place this time of year, but mine have been observed copulating on two occasions (two that I've SEEN- who knows how many more!). If this is the case, when should I remove the male? Will the female show any obvious signs of gravidity? Thanks for any replies- I know these sound like stupid questions, but as I said I have kept about a zillion snakes for about a zillion years, but am totally ignorant when it comes to breeding. Thanks!

I have had Southern and Trans Pecos copperheads breed in the fall. I still hibernate the snakes and put them together again in the Spring. I always have big, healthy babies whether the animals breed in the Fall or Spring. Alex
