humidity ?

buffysmom Feb 03, 2004 10:57 PM

How do you all maintain the humidity in your tanks? I have my snake on a mixture of EcoEarth & reptile bark. I actually poured water in yesterday & mixed it w/ the substrate, achieving a 60% humidity. Today it's down to 35%. I even have 1/2 the top covered w/ saran wrap.

I'm probably bad, but I don't even measure the humidity. Corns don't need as much humidity as other snakes, but being dry isn't good either. I just go by how well they shed, and they all seem to do it with no problems. I know my house is very dry, but the cages aren't as bad. I have HUGE water dishes, and that raises the humidity nicely. Also, putting the water dish over the heated side, will make the water evaporate faster, which will add to the humidity. But with the dish on the hot side, you have to check/refill it about twice as often.

I wouldn't reccomend actually getting the substrate wet, it will raise the humidity temprorarily, but it can also cause molds to grow. FAST! Just last week one of my girls dragged a paper towel into her water and it soaked up the water and spread it around to the whole box. When I went to clean it all out the next day, there was mold already growing! And this is a plastic box with paper towel substrate! The mold grew just over night that fast.

Someone else will have actual humidity %'s and stuff i'm sure, (someone who works harder than I do) But really, unless your snake is having shed problems, I guess I wouldn't worry about humidity too much.

I too would NOT recommend pouring water in the substrate. Although you might want it humid you don't want the substrate wet, this can lead to a lot of problems like scale rot etc.

Also as mentioned in the previous post, corns don't need that high of humidity as ball pythons and atb's etc.

To answer your question, I put Glad Cling Wrap over about half the cage, this seems to help out a lot.

Hope this helps.

I won't stress about it so much. My little guy is pretty new to me, so he hasn't shed yet. I'll watch & learn.

Thanks! It aint easy coming up w/ 6 "Newton" names. Helmut was a real find, an artist famous for his controversial nudes.

I live in the desert and things tend to be exrta dry out here. My corn has a wide water dish and I have a humidifier (bought it from the drugstore) that runs in my room. If I know she's going to shed, I move it close to her cage, as well as making a humidity hut. That works for us...just thought I'd throw in that sometimes your geographical location can dictate how much effort you must exert for this.
