A Few questions about mice breeding

Chuck420 Feb 04, 2004 01:15 AM

i am thinking on starting a small mice colony i was wondering what the temps and everything had to be like for them to breed? also can i keep a male and lets say 2 or 3 females together at all times? how big of a tank would i need for this? or rack/tub...how long can they breed for? if i think of more questions i will ask thanks for the help

Room temp is good for rodent breeding. Some go way down to the mid 40s but I rather stay in the 70s. HEAT will kill them faster...over 80-85 and you will broil them.
With mice you want to set up the group and leave them the heck alone. DON'T move mice in and out of the group. Mice, once set up, will kill intruders. Easiest way to increase a group is let them raise a few babies into breeders. DON'T move the male in and out...they will kill him. DON'T keep more than one male mouse per group.....chances are excellent that they will kill each other, or maim each other beyond reproductive abilitys.
I have tubs that are about 15X18 or so and I set up anywhere from 1.5 to 1.8 in them. About every three to five months I pick out the worn looking girl(s) here and there and let the group raise up a daughter to replace her.
I feed dog kibble and leftover stale cereals and leftover bird seeds and a oat/ whole corn/ sunflower mix.

Failure is not an option. It comes bundled with the software.
