which one to get?

jensen Feb 04, 2004 03:10 AM

i have been thinking of getting a chameleon. i have two red tail boas and a bearded dragon. i've been reading info on chameleons lately and really have been considering getting one. i was wondering if anyone can give me a little info on the chameleons that i am planning to get. if i do decide on adding to my family, i was thinking of gettin a nosy be, ambanja, or a ambilobe. what are the difference between the three besides location, and color. why does it seem that ambilobe chameleons seem to be more expensive? any info would be greatly apprciated.

does anyone have a chameleon condo, and if so, how is it? i saw it on a web site and i thought that it looked like a pretty cool cage. thanks again.

I do NOT recommend the Chameleoncondo. I have two of them
that I got a over a year ago. The first problem is that the
chameleons drop off of them and roam, the second problem that
I have had is that both dripping systems leak, making a big
mess. The worst problem that I had was that one of the wires
was shorted out and could have burned the house down. My
electrican had to rewire the fixture. As far as the different
locales go, choose what you like. I would recommend getting a
young one, that way he can acclimate to your climate etc.
Purchase one that is between 4 months to 7 months of age. BE
VERY CAREFUL who you buy from. There are several reputable
breeders, and then there are some really bad ones. The Ambilobe/
Picasso is my favorite, they are stunning animals. But that
is just my opnion. Legendcham

All the morphs are pretty much the same. Some people claim that the ambilobes get larger than the others. I have seen some very large ambilobes, but I've also seen some very large ambanjas. So I would say the only difference is color.

The reason why the ambilobes are a little more expensive is simply because they are not as readily available as the other morphs. Purchase the morph that is most appealing to you. Most cham keepers eventually keep more than one morph.

One thing to note before you buy is that Chameleon care is a bit more tricky than boas and beardies. They are not as hardy. It would be best if you read some caresheets first.

I've attached a pic of an ambilobe.

i'm surprised that the chameleon forum is not as popular as the other forums. as beautiful as they are, i thought that every reptile lover would have one, but i guess in do time. as soon as i can convince my wife into gettin another reptile, i will add to my little family. and when i do, i'll defiantly be posting pic's.

Hi: Some of you experts chime in here please as I'm unsure if I read this info correctly. I believe I read someplace(sorry I can't referrence it now) that the different locals have some variation on rainfall. With Nose Be and Ambanja having the highest so the tendency on these morphs to need a higher humidity could be greater then the other morphs. Course, being a newbie myself, I do not know if this variation is considerable, or even if the info I read was correct. Any comments? Regards, Maggie
