Recommendations on Dog/Cat Chow & Substrates for Roach Breeding

lizardman Feb 04, 2004 07:54 AM

Just wondering what most roach-breeders use for protein to feed their roaches. Which brands of dog/cat chow? Chicken (laying) mash?

Also, which substrate is the best for roach breeding? Sphagnum peat? Orchid(fir)bark? Aspen mulch? Potting soil mixes-which brand? or a mixture of the ones mentioned?

Thanks.

I feed mine a regular supply of Blue Seal Krunchies or the cheapo deluxe Sam's Club brand dog kibble, add veges and greens nightly or every other. Have tried chick mash but found it messier and more likely to mold than I liked.

Mine are on shavings right now but I think I am going to moss next change over.....just to see if it is easier to use. Something for babies to hide in is a great help though.

I've heard substrate is unneccassary with roaches. I was using pine shavings a while ago and now don't use anything for the colony of MHR I have. I just use lots of cardboard and egg cartons etc.
THanks for the reply about the rats

I don't know that it is necessary with MHR but with the lobsters is gives the babies a great place to congregate. The Hissers trouble is all the poop! I like a layer of shavings to clean out with. I don't know a better way with them.

I feed my roaches the same dogfood I give my retired greyhound...Eukanuba, which supposedly has the best nutrition, all of which I want passed down into my monitors which eat them...Feeding your roaches junk will give your roaches bad nutrition. But then again, how much a difference could dogfood make when it comes to roaches.... I have the good stuff laying around, so I use it.

I like to use aspen bedding as well, it gives the nymphs places to hide, since it appears the larger adults are territorial and compete for higher spots...
