Why do I see alot of reference to them. Do they put more heat enegy than say a flood light or incandesent of egual wattage?

Are great they make a very hot basking spot with low wattages, they dont get too hot as a halogen spot, they are tough, durable, cheap, save electric bill, help prevent your animal from the danger of dehydration by using lower wattage bulbs also as they allow for better control of a temp gradient.

From the bottom of light to the top of basking spot is adout 8" what would be a good watt range to experiment with. Right now I'm using a 75 watt floodlight, this puts the basking spot at 135
degrees. Ant ideas would probably save me a trip or two to the hardware store. Thanx for the input. Clint

185 degrees F from 8 inches away. In my albigs cages 3 or 4- 45 watt halogens reach 156 f from 13.5 inches away. Are you using an infared temp gun or a thermometer made to read air temps? The thermometers for ambient temps read much lower on surfaces.

I bought a temp gun from P.E. Thanx for the info, that gives me a starting point.

I use indoor/outdoor halogen spotlights. My water monitor can splash water on them and they won't blow up. Also, if he reaches up and touches them, they won't burn him. They concentrate all of the heat directly down into a concentrated area, so make sure that spot doesn't get to hot. Because of the hieght of my lights, 50 watts is as high as I can go as compared to other heating lamps that can be as high as 150 watts.
