In the state of Georgia, no one is allowed to own corns, corn morphs, cb,wc, along with all other potentially native non-venomous reptiles, A small group of us have been discussing for a while getting these laws changed, as buyers and sellers it will affect you and your buisinesses directly by signing this petition, thanks -please help us and go and sign, damien

I read the petition & don't understand how it will make owning cb snakes legal. It sounds as if the current law bans collection of wild caught herps & this petition seeks to change the fee for doing that from the current fee of $50 to a new fee of $25. Am I reading this wrong?

currently in ga you can collect only native venomous without a permit such as an eastern diamond back rattlesnake. to possess any non venomous native snakes u need a permit that cost $50 a year and you must only use them for educational purposes
i asked the dnr if i could breed cornsnakes for educational purposes like colleges and zoos and he said that would be illegal you must get 12 hours in each year and document it.
personally i want corns to be legalized in ga and i would like see people in the hobby being able to breed them here.

I copied and pasted the petition here, It isn't much of a petition:

To: U.S Congress

Section code 27-1-28 prohibits the collecting of any native non venomous snakes, terrestrial turtles and lizards in the State of Georgia. An annual $25 fishing/hunting license would be needed to collect any native venomous snake, native non venomous snake, turtles, lizards and amphibians. Reptiles and amphibians that are endangered would not be allowed to be collected.A set number on the amount of reptiles and aphibians would be 4 per day. Many people feel that the current scientific collecting fee of $50 is excessive and may discourage beneficial native research on native wildlife. With the above proposals perhaps this new revenue can be used to offset the reduction in scientific collecting fees. Help us in Georgia change the reptile laws so we can have corn snakes and many other native reptiles and amphibians.

Now maybe it's just me, but this petition is rather silly, all it is requesting is a price cut in permits. Seems to me, that if you want something done, you should be asking for more than a 25$ off law. Even changing the fee to 25$ isn't going to make it easier for someone to become a corn owner, because you still need to have them for only "Educational purposes".

I know petition online is all the rage for PETA and other such "cultish" organizations, because it's a "do-it-yoursellf" petition site. If this petition had some real data, and reasons why the laws should be changed, it would maybe do some good. But as it stands, asking for a reduced permit fee, isn't going to do much of anything for a person wanting to breed Corns or any other native herp of GA for the love of the animal.

I'm vary glad I don't live in GA, and sorry for those of you who do. Write up a petition that will actually help small time herpers, and I'm sure you'll get more than 35 signatures.

why is it addressed to the US Congress? Shouldn't it be addressed to the Ga. state legislature? Maybe it could be re-written to include something about exempting aberrant animals and also breeding more than 4 animals, as well as allowing swapping and selling c.b. babies. Maybe it should mention getting legal specimens from another state. I think Pa. does that. States often like to model their rules after a precedent that is already working.

If you decide to rewrite it, you might want to check out Pa laws and Cal laws on "the other forum" (email me for address if you don't already have it)for the wording of how they do it.

Good luck - hope it works!

As a snake lover I can certainly understand wanting to have a corn snake or any other species. However, conservation of existing populations is paramount to ownership. It seems the law you are trying to change could potentially cause a serious problem for the local population of both venemous species and non-venemous species. I hope that you are able to change the law such that you can purchase a CB snake from a reputable dealer.

I will not be signing the petition until it is revised and I hope other readers of this board agree with me. I do respect your efforts to change the law regulating possession of snakes and I hope in the future you can have a collection of CB snakes.
