skin reaction to antibiotic (fortaz) injections

sumherper Feb 04, 2004 02:02 PM

I have observed discoloration appearing in the areas where there were injections given, at both the sub q, and intermuscular sites. This is on a Ionides, and the injections were given about 4 months ago. As the skin sheds around the injection sites, there has been a lot of flaking(almost dandruff like), and an orange hue has developed at the sites as well. The vets have no answers, and have just concluded that perhaps this individual had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic itself.

My question is... Has anyone heard or had this sort of reaction occur with their animal, and if so, did your vet reccomend/ perscribe any sort of treatment(topical ointment, etc)?

My vet warned me that it could cause permanent discoloration.

That antibiotics are designed for mammals, not reptiles. This causes local scaring, something to do with the PH balance or something. Yep, thats what I was told. Good luck, F

With antibiotics, I dont know if I would call it a allergic reaction though. It is mainly caused from the med's being designed for mammals and not reptiles. The chemical makeup within reptiles is different therefor it gives them these side effects your seeing.
