Sick leo slowly healing, but I'm still worried...

ChuUtena Feb 04, 2004 03:08 PM

I'm not sure if anyone remembers, but about a week or two ago I joined this forum and posted about a sick leo. If you don't remember I'll recap. I work at a local pet store, and some woman dumped off a severly calcium deficient gecko (not one she bought at our store, nor had she ever come into our store before) and I got elected to take it home and nurse it back to health. The woman didn't even know what it was, she called it a "Geico" and had no idea what calcium was. Yeah stupid I know. Well the vet I talked to (who is a reptile vet) told me to get liquid calcium and meat based baby food. In the baby food I mix the t-rex leopard gecko dust and basically put small drops on food on her nose/face and let her lick it off. The good thing is that her arms aren't so rubbery and are starting to harden. The bad thing is that I'm afraid her one backward arm will heal backwards. I'm also not sure if she's getting enough water. Or would you think the baby food would have enough water in it to be benneficial? I spray her with water, and soak her so she will lap a little up, but she can't really drink water because she can't move very well.

Well I know I rambled but I want her to be okay. I hate stupid people. Please any help would be great.

I would think the baby food has plenty of moisture in it...I'm glad to hear she's doing well! She may very well end up with a permanently deformed leg...but once everything is hardened up properly, she should do alright on it.

If you're worried you can put a couple drops of water, pedialyte, or gatorade on the tip of her nose a couple times as day for her to lick off.

Good luck, and I'm glad to hear the animal is in better hands now. Sounds like you are doing all you can. Did the vet inject her with calcium?

No I didn' take her into the vet, I just talked to her on the phone. It sounds kinda mean, but I didn't want to spend a bunch of money on a gecko that was going to die. She was very bad when I got her, I'm surprised she lived this long. The vet said just to give this liquid calcium and it would be good for her (that's what they do with their really sick ones at her office) And because she looked so bad when I got her, I honestly think a shot of everything would have been a huge shock to her system. She's doing so great now I would have never thought she would still be alive, let alone as healthy looking (as she can be) as she is now. Thanks!
