Infertile eggs are yellow and soft.

Fertile eggs will be white, hard and slightly chalky to the touch.

NOT necessarily. Ive had infertile eggs that look perfectly white and healthy.
The only way to tell for sure is to candle it.
I can tell within an hour of it being laid if it is fertile.
And a good eye can even see a heartbeat, which I can. I can see the heartbeat for up to 3 days, and then as the embryo grows it becomes less visible, and you will see mostly red where the embryo is.

If it is feritile...there will be a red circle, with a red vein going to the embryo inside the circle, and thats where the embryo is.

Most people dont see this because they are afraid to candle their eggs, and dont want to risk it. But ive watched babies grow inside the egg from day one to hatch date by candling, and have had no problem. Just as long as you dont rotate the egg, be gentle with it, and dont leave it out too long...there shouldnt be a problem with candling continuously.

Good Luck!
