Superworms

Lucien Jun 07, 2003 10:01 PM

Just a quick question..How many beetles would I need to pupate to form a stable breeding colony of Superworms? Right now I've got 6.. and ten more pupae cases ready plus.. 10 more in the chambers to pupate... Should that be enough or do I need more?

Hi, Lucien. In answer to your question, I would say, as many as you can get. I breed my own meal worms and waxworms to make sure I have all sizes as needed. I move every beetle I can to the new laying/hatching bin. I never heard anyone say they had too many worms for feeding, but I have heard people who don't have enough!!
Waxworms are another fun one to breed but more of a challenge. You have to cature the moths to lay more eggs. If you are interested, let me know, I have a great how-to sheet.

good luck,
jude

*chuckles* Oh I know you can't have too many but I was looking for a minimum so I can at least meet that... I've not lost a pupae case yet so I can't be doing too badly *chuckles* As for waxworms... I'd be interested in seeing that sheet certainly... I'm feeding 6 leopard geckos and one savannah monitor... so all the food I can breed is a good thing... I breed enough mealies to supply about 500 a month to other people... the rest I use as a staple diet for my leo's...and keep breeders running...
