I found the GREATEST boxes

IcedGoddess Feb 04, 2004 04:52 PM

After buying the wrong ones once, and going to about 6 different places to find them. I FINALY followed all the advise and went to Wal~mart to look. At first I was disapointed because I couldn't find any long enough, then I saw them. Rubbermaid, 43-1/2qt with the Cleverlatch. They were 5.96 a box, and if you go with a lidless rack then the tops don't matter, but I like the security and flexibility of regular shelfs with lidded boxes. These are the greatest lids! They lock! I will probably still use binder clips on the two front corners, but this lock is perfect.

Here's the box with the lid hinged in the back and held open.

A close-up of the latch, push one side in and it's snapped secure, push the other side in and you can lift the lid.

And the back showing the hinged side, with my 18lb cat on top for size comparison (she's really a huge cat)

So anyone looking for boxes, go to Wal~Mart! ( I usually don't like the store, which is why I went everywhere else first)

make sure that only adults go in those things, they are great boxes, but you want to see a vanishing snake, from experience- damien

>>I use the smaller versions for hatchlings.

I had to make some modifications, though, to keep them escape proof.

Above the latch you can see there is an indentation in the lid that allows a hatchling to slip right between the box and the latch and escape.
So, I added a strip of silicon inside the lid. This seals the gap and still allows for proper operation of the latch.

Thanks for the pics. I am planning on using these for my adults. The smaller boxes I bought a week ago are normal covers, and that's where everyone hatched in 03 will be staying. I seriously doubt that my adults could fit in that space, but I have a tube of silicone, so maybe I'll do that just to be positive.

I was just so surprized that I actually found nice big bixes for less than 6$ a piece! Everywhere else I looked they were 12.99 or more. Once place even had them for almost 25$ a piece. I couldn't see paying that for a plastic box.

I have personal experience with hatchlings escaping from the smaller containers just like Draybar described... FORTUNATELY, i suspected that might happen so i placed the containers in a larger one and waited for the jail break to occur..LOL.

Last week I found 40qt sterilites at Target that are awesome. I went to 4 Targets and 3 Walmarts and only found 9 of them. Must be great for storage or there are more snake enthusiasts than ever before!

They are much larger than the 32qt sterilites that are most commonly found in racks. I think they're new. I like them b/c they don't require racks or weights to hold down the lids...they have the gray snap handles on each end that secure the lid perfect. I couldn't ask for anything better for when I move in a few months. Check out your local Targets for them, but they are rare to find! BUT not expensive at all $6-7 each. I'll email a pic if anyone wants. peace, jason

>>I wasn't sure how well they would work so put a couple of them in a large rubbermade tub. A couple of hours later the hatchlings were free.
It didn't take long to figure out the problem.
Since I added the silicone strip they have been great. With that type of lid they just seem sturdier. They make it easy to keep track of the lid also.

I just looked there, and a box of the size I just got for 5.96 is 15$ there. I still say wal~mart's the place to go. Even if you don't like the "CleverLatch" they had all kinds, and all cheap!

I think I have enough boxes for the moment though Got high on plastic fumes last nigh burning holes in 12 boxes. haha
