Laura, If I were you I'd put the male in with her anyway because you just may be surprised. I thought the male was closer to 3.5' and just may small in stature for his age. It's worth trying. What have you got to lose? I'd go for it!
Ive read of males being lost if the female was too large and they were too small; I'd be heart broken if she squashed him on accident. He is beautiful. She is 3 times his girth or more.
