In response to male albino hypo-tangerine leopard gecko

fredd Jun 07, 2003 10:41 PM

I did not mean to create such a stir with my question. I just wanted to know where one could get a male. I believe the problem is that I purchased my albino which is orange in appearance for 250$ from a a breeder that is found on the list of breeders on kingsnake.com. Maybe what has happened is that I truely do not have a hypo-tangerine, or a tangerine albino male for that matter. So I could have been misinformed about what exactly he is. I just really like his high orange appearance and it is that trait that I am trying to find in another albino male. In response to the babies, I am not trying to do anything with this project but, try to make enough to pay for their food. So I was just going to take the 6-9 month old babies and sell them to local pet stores for a very reasonable amount of money.

I hope that you don't think I was attacking you. I just know how much people that frequent this forum love their animals and how they/we typically respond to questionable posts.

You may be able to find what you want from Ron Tremper or K & N Reptiles. Ron breeds in large enough quantities he could probably fill any request at any time (speculation on my part; don't really know).

There was a high school a few years ago that was using their leopard geckos and other herps as a multi-class project. They had their biology, economics, marketing and possibly shop classes all working together I think to handle multiple aspects of herpetoculture to learn from. They had a website; you may be able to find it as well.

Why work with simple recessive morphs such as hybino's???
there is no ginetic calculations when it comes to breeding a albino to a albino, all the babies will be albino. You dont even get to use a punnets square for that(well you can, but it would be useless). You should get into the most complicated crosses where you can actually show students the percentages of the outcomes of morphs.

Exactly. And I don't see how a line bred trait like tangerine or hypo will show much except variations between individuals, which you can do with normals. For something really interesting, get a bunch of hets and double hets for various traits.

To make a long story short, I did not want to fully explain every in and out I would be attempting with my grant. My intent was to have heterozygous individuals and homozygous, then I would use phenotypes of individuals to try to intensify the orange coloration. Again, I am not fully explaining everything I am going to do, but the suggestions are not going to be ignored if I have not thought of them yet. I have put a lot of time and thought into my project and I really look forward to not just doing it this year but doing it in the years to come. I have been very impressed with all of the replies, thank you to those that have attempted to be helpful.
