i don't know. but even if there are no state laws, you also need to contact your municipality/township and see if they have any laws.
i live in pennsylvania where there are no laws concerning reptiles (save the federally banned things and native species), but many of the towns around me (though not the one in which i live) have very strict ordinances that basically only allow for ribbon snakes/garters to be kept. these ordinances say no venomous and no constrictors. from what i understand, such local ordinances are not uncommon through pa/de/nj/ny/md.

It is near impossable to get a permit in NJ...... If you are not a zoological insitute you wont get a permit..... NJ does not allow private collectors to keep venomous.....You live in the wrong state if you want to keep hots......

just not legally. It's one of those sad realities (much like venomoids), that people keep snakes illegally. I had a real winner from Jersey at a Hamburg show try selling me a timber rattlesnake (which is also protected in Jersey and illegal to bring to Hamburg shows BTW) that he had in a hidden sac. KS.com is a small percentage of the people who actually keep hots and even reptiles for that matter. Imagine what the numbers would actually be like if we knew about the people who don't get on the internet. Not to mention, there are quite a few on here that keep them illegally, several from my state, and there are several from Jersey as well. I had to get rid of the snakes and move two to an area a few hundred feet outside of my city because of a local ordinance. I spoke with the City Officials and my license didn't matter. Even my 12" western hognose is deemed illegal, yet the local pet store sells pythons, boas, and scorpions.....go figure. We can only hope that people try to do the right thing, this way it helps with legislation. Sometimes I wish they would make a permit system on a Federal level and charge a good deal for the permits, this way they can take some of the money and start AV banks where they would be best located. Not to mention, a high tag on the permits may weed out SOME of the riff-raff. Now I know, most people will read this and think that my idea may lead more people to keep snakes illegally, which it may. BUT, it also may be appealing to government officials and to the general public (well maybe not the general public). Something is going to have to give, unfortunately, it may take green to do it. I'd much rather pay $500 or $1000 a year for a permit, and have routine inspections, than lose the priveledge of keeping hots. I know my idea sounds CRAZY, it's just my rambling, that, and trying to come up with SOME ideas to keep everyone happy. Florida has a great permit system, but Florida also has a high number of people keeping illegal animals. What we need to do is show the government and public that by taking the time and effort to get the permits, that we are responsible and committed to our hobby. This way it protects the RESPONSIBLE, LEGAL enthusiasts, and puts the others into the criminal category (like someone driving a car without a license).
Sorry this is so damn long, and for my crazy ideas.
