Safe Construction Material

antonm Feb 04, 2004 11:37 PM

I have a plan for a waterfall that I want to construct out of potters clay or similar substance but I have a couple of questions. First, will unglazed clay store bacteria? Second, is it overall safe? And lastly if you have any other suggestions for a material other than clay it would appreciated too (I was considering plaster but am unsure of how to work with it or where to obtain it). Any input appreciated, thanks in advance.

Plaster would be unsuitable as it will disolve in long term exposure to water. The clay would be a good medium for bacteria as its very porus. This can, however be used to your advantage. I've heard of a couple formulas for the propagation of moss for such installations. Usually involves mixing the culture into the slurry as its cast. There are a few good casting mediums that don't involve firing (as the clay would) in the processing.
If you live near a medium sized city, look up casting supply or mold making supply stores and try to find "Gardencast" (or something like that) or maybe "Gardenstone". Its great for making outdoor statues. Hope this is helpful.
