Morph question

Scalesnfeathers Feb 05, 2004 12:25 AM

Thanks again to the person that responded to my ? before on breeding balls.

2 more things..
Does anyone know of a site which lists the more common ball python morphs AND whether they are dominant, co-dom, recessive, etc..? I just don't know what is what when it comes to their colors, and I want to narrow down what I am most interested in.

Second thing ~ Are their ANY ball morphs (besides normals) that can be purchased for under $200 for a baby? I'de love to get a pastel, but they seem to be sky high in price like all the rest. Albinos are out of my budget range, too. Honestly, about $125 or so for the snake alone is what I am hoping to spend.

I got my little 'normal' male for $25 and he's a great guy. I do not expect that type of deal for a specially colored snake, but I would like to find a little female (preferably not one that "may be het for"..) that is a nice color.

Thank you!!

....To answer your 2nd question, the only genetic morph I can think of would be "Black-back", but it's difficult to find females for under $200. Of course if you're willing to go with 50/66% and in some cases 100% hets (ie, 100% albino het males often sell for under $200), there are several morphs you could get into (ghosts, caramel albinos, genetic strips, etc). Hope this helps! Scott J. Michaels DVM

...is because of the numbers of wild caught baby Balls that come in every year. Hundreds of thousands of babies jam-packed into shipping conatiners and sold for $5 to every distributor you can think of. By the time it hits your hot little hands, its $25.

And this is what Captive-Bred normals have to compete with. If there was no endless supply of wild caught normals, then you'd see the captive bred price rise as well. And so it should. I don't think people should own BP's for $25. No way.

Pastels are the cheapest morph pretty much, so if you think that's "sky high" then I'd say you are SOL. Sorry.

ScalesnFeathers Feb 05, 2004 02:18 AM

I would NEVER purchase a wild caught snake!! I am VERY against the capture of wild animals for the pet trade, as well as the cultivating of eggs or breeding farms in foreign countries.

Please don't jump to conclusions until you know the facts. He was born in captivity by some very responsible breeders who have wonderfully healthy hatchlings and some beautiful herps.

The reason the "normals" are so cheap is because they are extremely common in this area. I could go to a Petco store on any corner and spend ninety bucks for a baby ball.. But I don't support places like that. I would've bought him from a breeder even if he had been 5 times the amount he was. He happened to be a 'left over' from a breeding where they were trying to find which female(s) in their clutch carried whatever gene they were looking for. His mother had all normals, and therefore was not a carrier, so he and his siblings were being sold at a herp show.

When I get a female, she will also be captive bred - no exceptions.

Please, don't jump to conclusions..

jeff favelle Feb 05, 2004 02:56 AM

Maybe the guy who is going to sell albinos for $900 and your guy who sells normals for $25 should get together, make hets, and give them away for free.

ScalesnFeathers Feb 05, 2004 03:00 AM

I don't get it....
So I got a lovely, sweet, healthy, F/T rat-eating, CB, "normal" ball python cheaper than you.
What IS your deal?!

sjs Feb 05, 2004 09:31 AM

who is selling albinos for 900 .......ill buy EVERYONE of them then we dont have to worry about the market coming down now do we............ill keep them a year and get a bit older price of 3500 for them.......so if youve got them look me up.......NOBODY IS SELLING 900 dollar albinos.........and back to the original question on this thread..........go to a respectable dealer and look into some possable het females......cheep enough and could pay off.....best of luck .....Jerry

The guy who has the $25 CB is probably being completely honest here. There are many people who are breeding for high dollar morphs and when they get normals from a breeding project they consider them to be surplus. People who are making 20,000 from a spider aren't interested in the costs of feeding and housing a hatch of normals. I picked up my BP in the very same manner. They are out there and they are CB, you just have to have the right timing, right conections, and do a little research.

ScalesNFeathers Feb 06, 2004 02:00 AM

Yep. In the case of Squeeze's breeder, not only were these babies not what he was trying to make profit with, but also they were being sold at an expo and he did mark down the price to sell them that afternoon so that he didn't have to pack them up and bring them all the way back home with him. (In doing so it would have been harder on them and also stressful for the snakes). So, it worked out very well on both ends.

herpconsultants2 Feb 05, 2004 08:25 PM

Actually, I didn't read that this guy's BP was CF and it surprises me that you should jump to such conclusions.

It should also be pointed out that it is the MASSIVE captive farming operations going on in Ghana (mainly) that are responsible for the sheer diversity of balls we have in captivity today (or at least the AVAILABLITY of such morphs).

I think it is such a shame when posts like this are met by such animosity, especially when you don't even know the true facts!

herpconsultants2 Feb 05, 2004 08:27 PM

sorry, this should have been in reply to JF's original reply

Webster defines it as:

a: a local population of a species that consists of interbreeding organisms and is distinguishable from other populations by morphology or behavior though capable of interbreeding with them.
b: a phenotypic variant of a species.

Basically, ANY physical trait that IS GENETIC is a "morph". One of the morphs that is commonly ignored is high-gold. It isn't just a description, and a true high-gold or high-yellow is UNMISTAKEABLE. This guy here has been breeding a couple of my females, and I hope to have some baby high golds soon. I'd sell one to you for $125, which is about what they go for.

ScalesNFeathers Feb 06, 2004 02:11 AM

Feel free to e-mail me when your babies are born, and let me know where you're located.

Thank you for the info!
Yes, I think purchasing a female that carries a recessive trait will be fine, and exciting. It will be fun to have babies someday!

Check out newenglandreptile.com, ballpython.com, and vpi.com.

Unfortunately, a budget of only $125 will guarantee that you will not be getting any "morph" in the near future. The closest thing will be a male het albino ball python.

ScalesnFeathers Feb 05, 2004 02:56 AM

Guess I could start with a male het albino & a female normal and go from there.
Then of course poor Squeeze doesn't get in on any of the action!

Thanks again
