Sick dragon, please help

tkulp Feb 05, 2004 01:32 AM

On Saturday I posted that my 4.5 year old guy was vomiting up small amounts of brown liquid pretty regularly. I took him to the vet and she didn't see any impaction in his x-rays, no parasites in his fecal test, and his blood work came back more or less normal which should rule out infections. She started him on Baytril antibiotic anyway just in case. But poor Spikey keeps gagging stuff up its been about a week now and he isn't eating either. His beard is all black all of the time now, I'm really worried about him. I'm taking him back to the vet tomorrow for a barium x-ray to see his stomach better. Has anyone else encountered prolonged periods where their dragon regurgitates small amounts of stomach fluid a few times an hour? Please help!

Thanks

I haven't encountered that situation, nor heard of anyone dealing with it.

Good luck & keep us updated.

I'm not sure what the cause is but one thing is for sure, vomiting that often will bring up digestive juices which can irritate the throat and mouth, it is important to give his upper gastrointestinal tract a rest for several days before trying to feed him again. You should give fluids orally which will help wash the gastric fluids back down and help rehydrate him. Vomiting is just as dangerous as severe diarrhea, it will cause dehydration, which will cause the beardie to go downhill rather quickly. Keeping him hydrated is of upmost importance until the cause of his vomiting is discovered.

CheriS may be able to help in this area more than I can. She may know what the cause or causes could be.

Good luck and please keep us posted on his progress.

I would try a cc of pedialite a couple times a day and a probiotic and see if he keeps it down. The probiotic will help the digestive system. You may want to ask the people at parazap about their product as well. Stay off of solids for a few days though.

Cheri thinks. She mentioned a few days ago that she thought she had an idea of what it was...

I would like to know what would cause such a reaction in a beardie.
