New Cage for my little guy

loyski Feb 05, 2004 03:15 AM

I just finished my tegus cage and he seems to hate it. All he does in the new enclosure is try to get out. I put him back in his old 20 gal tank, and he loves it there.
What do you guys use for a hide box? Im using a rubbermaid container, cut a hole stuffed it with dirt and cypress mulch and put it in upside down. Is that right?
Thanks guys...

some times it takes a couple of day for them to get used to an encloser one of mine did the same thing for a few days before he calm down, give him another try.

It takes time to adjust, hive it a week or two. For a hide, mine have tight fitting hollow logs or just a piece of wood thrown down and they will dig under it and then back fill it blocking up the door

Actually, he gets along great with my dog. My dog likes him, but hates mice. He will stare at my tegu ALLLLLL day long.

They always seem to 'test' a new cage for a week or so, after they realize it is un-escapeable they will calm down to normal.
Bigger enclosure should give'em more room to run around and help build a healthy body. Nice cage by the way! I've noticed with any size cage all they really need or want is a deep substrate to dig into and bury themselves. Hide box really isn't even needed if the substrate is deep enough. The nursery/garden store by my home sells some shredded redwood bark that is sometimes called 'angel hair' or something like that. It seems to pack down very nice and still seperates easily when the tegus want to dig into it and bury themselves. It absorbes the poo odur very good too! I change each tegu cage about every three months or so in the winter and about every two months in the summer when they eat more. I have two and a half year old blue tegus, and one blue thats about a year and a half old.
