Breeders speak up...who's got what gravid??

DeanAlessandrini Feb 05, 2004 04:05 PM

Ok, it’s that time of year…most of the breeders should know what’s gravid and what’s not in February.
My biggest (7')female is definitely gravid…and I have a second (the almost all black snake) that’s a definite “maybe”. It’ll be another 2 weeks or so before I know for sure on her.

I have a third breeder female that’s getting the year off…
And fourth (a nice red female) that’ll be big enough to go next year.

I have one erebennus that is going to lay…
But…you never know…remember what happened with 3 of my females re-absorbing last year!

We’ll see.

I’m wondering how everyone else is doing?
Who is going to have what?

There is a HUGE backlog of people wanting indigos…I get about 5 or 6 requests every week and I don’t even have a website. A lot of people are going to be disappointed again this year unless someone produces a bunch of babies. I’m actually donating probably half of my eastern crop this year (assuming I get any)…so…people are really going to hate me.

This is going to be a very lean year for me in terms of couperi; just one female and everyone else is getting the year off. Like you, I have been getting many more requests than what I will be able to help....oh well.

Other breeding projects for which I hope to have success with this year are: olive pythons, gilas, eastern massasaugas, atheris squamigera, green tree pythons and our argentine black and white tegus.....lots of fun ahead!

btw....the spilotes are doing great; they are going to be fantastic display animals someday.

The excitement is building. Hope this doesn't jinx things. Winter in New England sucks and it's a pleasure to care for the snakes. Texas indigo from Mark Butterfield (I know it came from somewhere before Mark - someone tell me!) is gravid. Female Eastern that produced extreme red hatchlings last year looks on schedule for late March delivery. Of two other large Easterns on breeding loan one looks good and one is possible. They mated in January and maybe will be behind first female which mated in November and December.

And I know I shouldn't have allowed it Dan, but Unicolor is gravid. She was 5 ft. long in December. Raising Unicolor pair has been satisfying. The change in color was dramatic and they are the mellowest Drymarchon I've ever met.

wow! you're gonna be rather busy this summer steve! good luck!......the baby drys born here get used to alot of activity around them from the git-go and people [and even cats!] just become part of the everyday scene to them. they get cut no slack. by the time they leave here, they are pretty much fearless.......btw, the father of your uni babies, now almost a 7 year old, still continues to lighten to this day!! he is an off yellow color [now] and the skin between his scales is yellow. when he comes out of his hide to cruise, it is a sight that i never tire of! kudos and best of luck to all you guys this summer!........dannio

Good luck Steve...and don't forget about our trade plan!
We need to keep this erebennus blood as diverse as possible!

Well, my rubidus appears to be gravid. They mated several times, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. My female blacktail appears to be gravid also.

I'm not counting my drys until they hatch, though.....or at least until I get fertile eggs.

Wow that's great your rub is gravid!!

knock wood you could be the first in a bunch of years to produce those. Good Luck!

which was almost exactly what I wanted.

The only species I hoped to get anything from was my Green Sanzinia and they don't look like they took. Everything else either needed a break or another year to grow.

Next year I hope to get a clutch of Easterns and clutches from my 2 "Honorary Drymarchon", Black Head Pythons and Mussuranas.

Yo Dino... Good Idea on the donations of the Easterns. No permits needed and you get a Tax Write-Off if it goes to a non-profit.

Should be the right time for 2 couperi and 1 errebennus, but I'm not seeing any pre-laying activity..
