Snake not thriving

cecanady Feb 05, 2004 08:06 PM

Hello everyone. My little Amel (from Petco) just does not seem to be doing so well (compared to my Okeetee from KL). For the past month, she has been regurging about every other meal, does not seem nearly as strong as my Okeetee, and is definitely much thinner (they are close to the same length, and in different cages). I can't see any bones protruding, but she is a skinny snake. She takes food very well, but it will come back up half the time. I tried to switch her to fuzzies to add weight, but that came back after three days (YUCK!!!), and she took a pinkie about a week after that and I decided to pretty much just leave her alone until she gets bigger, so we haven't been handling her....I just lift up her hide to make sure she is still alive.

So here is the weekly food pattern since I bought her: sticks, regurge, sticks, sticks, sticks, sticks, fuzzie-regurge, pinkie-sticks, regurge, sticks, regurge....last two meals fed in the same week (I was trying to add some weight to her by trying two meals a week).

I just went and bought the smallest pinkies I have ever seen, and will wait 10 days to try to feed her again. Should I be concerned about this, or are all snakes this very different when it comes to girth, strength, and food? Thank you all for your kind wisdom!

I wish I had a happier reply for you I would suggest you get her in to a vet and bring a sample of her poo. Hopefully it will be something that can be cured easily. I fought this battle with an 02 amel and it when on for nearly a year, her vet tests were normal, she just didn't thrive. She was kept in the same situation as my other 02 and he never had a problem, ever. It's hard to watch them when they just keep regurging. I hope you can fix her up.

In the boa world we call them delicate snakes. Some snakes are sure heart breakers.Just try smaller meals at longer intervals. She may not shine like your KL corn but as long as she is holding down some food she should be ok.I would use a cheap digital scale to keep track of her weight.I use a small desk calender to record feeding and weights and i would try to develop a pattern so she holds down the food you give her.I have heard of success stories were the snake just takes off on it's own...Good Luck..Paul.

I have to second the vet option, especially since she is from petco. For the full story see my sad news post below. I hope she is just a picky snake!
