possible new record for garter births

Carmichael Feb 05, 2004 08:20 PM

I just thought I would share this with the die hard Thamnophis enthusiasts on this forum. Late last summer, a very large female common/Chicago garter snake, found near the Middlefork Savanna in Lake County, Illinois, gave birth to 86 neonates. Of the 86, only two were still born and the rest were released near the site where the mother was found. We have submitted the information to Herp Review.

Please provide references/journals/contributions, saying "there have been more" doesn't mean much (nothing personal). Thanks, Rob

Ok,

H.Fitch---1965, University of Kansas, Musuem of Natural History 15: 493-564

The Garter & Ribbon Snake book, alot of people wouldn't count that as proof, but it's enough for me.
