So many kinds of worms....which are okay for leos?

Tigergenesis Feb 05, 2004 08:39 PM

Mealworms, Giant mealworms, superworms, silkworms, waxworms, butterworms, earthworms/nightcrawlers, redworms, hornworms......

my head is spinning! LOL.

What I'd like to know is of the worms listed above (other then mealworms and silkworms) which are okay for leos? And of those that are okay - which should be given on a limited basis (and limited to what)? And, did I forget any?

Thanks!

We give ours a staple diet of mealworms. The leos do just fine with them. We supplement their meals sometimes with Wax Worms, and a pinky every once in a while (for the ones that will eat them, at least).

I would stay away from redworms (red wrigglers if that was what you were referring to), they've been known to be toxic to some species of reptiles.

Hornworms I'm not to sure about, and earthworms geckos do eat but I don't know the nutritional content of them so I can't recommend them (maybe someone else can tell us). All the other worms you stated are fine.

Superworms (zoophobias), should only be fed to adults though, they're pretty big, and can put up a fight.

I'd like to provide a variety, but needed to know which were okay.
