Is the skin broken or folded up in anyway? Are there dark patches on his belly? Are you providing him with a humid hide? Need a little more detail on what exactly is the problem, from what you tell me there can be anything from nothing wrong to a serious problem.

Tail waving is normal though (sticking the tail straight up and slowly undulating it), since they use it as a warning, my gecko does it spontaneously all the time when he see's something wierd (like me peeking at him from my computer).

Mature males develop kind of papery scales that are a bit yellower, shinier and more opaque than those on the bellies of females.

The behavior you're describing is marking behavior. Males appear to try to rub their pores all over their furnishings. If you add new furniture, a female, or put him in a new tank you will see a lot of this type of behavior. My males also do it pretty regularly during the breeding season.

If he's eating regularly and there is no stuck shed of other abnormalities, I'm pretty sure the above explains his behavior.
