DIEING HATCHLING!!! PLEASE HELP

mike3 Feb 05, 2004 10:00 PM

2 week ago i thought my hatchling started to go into brumation because it was in its burrow, and it stopped eating. Tonight i found it breathing heavily, very skinny(lost 10 grams) and its left arm was messed up. It walks with its left arm underneath it, its seems as if it has lost most of its mobility in its arm, plus the arm was somewhat stiff. I am going to the vet this wensday because that is the only time they are available. What should i do, i force fed it 1 cc of sweat potato baby food, and gave it a 15 min warm bath so it can hydrate itself. After its bath it seemed more alert and active, but some times when it walked around in the water it would sway its head back and forth, and now it seems it is staring to lose control of its arms and possibly the legs. Does it have a nurological (sp?) problem? i stretched out and rubed its arms, which now feel less stiff and he is able to use them a little more. But, right after the bath he really started gasping for each breat with its mouth open. And he makes noices when he breaths in. Is is respitory infection? How did it get it if it hasn't been exposed to cold temps? Do you think it has a chance of surviving when the vet date as far away as wendsay. Also, It seems as if its lungs are larger than normal especially on the left side. What would make organs larg, cause deep breathing, and loss of use with front arms, and now it looks like the back legs are starting to go. What should i do, he is in great pain and is struggling to survive. I am keeping him warm right now. I am so confused and upset, please help i dont want to lose this little guy, i have been with him the day he hatched out of his egg.

911!! Call your vet and tell them it is an emergency!! Find another vet if you have to, don't wait till Wednesday!!! It sounds like a number of problems. My advice is to be worried and overcautious, get to a veterinary hospital or your vet ASAP!

Where are you located maybe someone from this board knows of a good vet nearby who can help?

Sometimes that is a sure sign of respratory infection, such as phemoneia, they do this to try and breath better.

I have to agree this is serious especially since he is such a little fellow, get to a good vet as soon as you can.

Not trying to bum ya, but these babies go down hill quick, dont waste anytime.

I sure hope he will be okay, we are ALL pulling for the little guy ! Let us know, how he makes out at the Doctors.

Hang in there Mike,

Eve

My juvi mali was showing those same symptoms. I gave her some fluids and went to the vet. She seemed better the next day but, the morning after that I woke up to find her dead. My vet did not know what happened. His best guess was that she had gotten dehydrated and then her liver or kidneys failed.

I would most def. say get the little guy seen now and anywhere you can get him in.
T-Rex makes Hydro-life. It has a slough of good stuff in it. I am at work though and can not list them. Amoung(sp?) other things it has an appitite booster and Vitamins and Minerals essential to reptiles. It may be worth a try for you.

If you can get raspberries try thoes also. They have a good Ca:P ratio (2:1) and would be a good source of fluids.

Best of luck and Godspeed.

there could be any number of things wrong with the animal, certainly have a professional take a look at it asap.

guessing right off the bat, could it be a calcium problem? sounds kinda like that, but then again, not really...

also, is this one of the babies that was in with the adults? i have had concerns about that forced society since the get-go, perhaps this is an aggression/damage problem, a broken limb or something that has now gotten infected...

regardless, there is not much you can do until you see a vet. a separate enclosure with terrific temps and a few good hidespots would give the little guy non competitive access to the tools it needs to limp by until a diagnosis.

sorry to hear about the trouble, best of luck.

I have put him in a separate cage with newspaper as a substrate. I am still force feeding him, because he is to weak to eat on his own. The problem is after i force feed him he regurgitates almost all of it up, then he struggles for hours to keep what is left in him in. He is getting worse all around, last night he couldn't even go into his burrow, he was in his food dish so i put him under one of the rock caves in his tank. It is just so sad to see him look like this. 2 weeks ago he was big and fat, so fat he looked obese. Now he is struggleing to breath, thin as paper, and has basically wasted away to nothing. What should i do, i am 99% sure he wont make it to see monday. I dont know what to do, what would be the humane way of dealing with a situation like this. He probably wont live to see the vet, is in extreme pain and suffering. I just dont know what to do. Do you think a dog and cat vet would let me take him in so they can give him "the shot" so he can die peacefully in my hands. What do you think i should do?

Yes, any veterinarian can help you "put him to sleep". It is a little more difficult with reptiles than mammals so I can give you the directions to give to the vet. I will email you.
