Aquatic plants will help remove harmful nitrates but they won't remove actual chunks of debree or reduce the amonia level. Water changes should still be done but if it's a well planted large water area they probably won't have to be done often. Adding a small submersible filter will actually remove pieces of waste that collect in the water and will form an additional spot for beneficial bacteria to form on. Submersible filters often move the water too fast and if its a deep area dart frogs could have trouble getting out of it. Good luck,
