Toad ID question...

arcteryx79 Feb 06, 2004 02:00 PM

Hello!
I need some help with ID these 2 toads. We think they are a Fowlers and American toads, but just want to make sure. The were found in Central Indiana. Thanks for any help.

I get so tired of trying to figure the two out I hardly make the effort anymore, especially since they hybridize so much here in SE VA. Check out p515 in Peterson field guide. The cranial crest appear to be touching the partoid glands = fowleri

Thanks for your opinion. The crests do touch the partoid gland in both toads. We had figured the one on the left was a Fowlers, but the right toad just "looks different" in the profile. Maybe one is a funky mix. Have never seen a 100% American (that I'm aware of)! Just wanted to try to find out EXACTLY what we had. Will look in Petes guide, we have Audubon.

Thanks again!!

It's very difficult for me to tell them apart too. Could they be housed together or would the toxins be lethal to each other? Please refresh. Thanks.

I would never illegally keep native wildlife...... but I have heard that these 2 have lived in close proximity for along time now, with no ill results to either animal! They are found in the same habitat as well.
