uro's are great lizards, uro's require alot of heat and are heat lovers, just keep in mind the electircity costs when you decide. and also do some research on them before you purchase, if you still want one the best starter uro is the mali, they are low price, hardy, and most tame down nicely, if you are gonna house them in a tank you should get at least 55 gallon tank, or a 40 gallon long, which has the same dimensions as a 55 but shorter in height. if you want a great beginner lizard i would recommend in my opinion a leopard gecko, or the bearded dragon, beardies become very tame. if you still want a uro then good luck, uro's are great lizards. hope this helps good luck in your choice

I agree with just about everything that was said before. Leopard geckos ARE a very good beginner lizard. However, in my opinion, they don't have half the personality that Uros have. We have 3 mali uromastyx, and they are all sources of great amusement. Definitely read up on how much time you need to invest in keeping your lizards happy and healthy. If you can handle it, I say go for it. Uros are very rewarding and fun lizards, both to care for and to interact with.

One other thing, IF you do decide on a uro, buy from a reputable breeder who has captive bred uros or VERY long term wild caughts (more than a year) in my opinion. I have been conducting a small personal survey on uro mortality and the strongest common link is they were ALL wild caught even though some were represented as cb, but the owners of these uros leaned towards wc. Stay away from reptile shows and NEVER feel sorry for the lone, skinny uro in the pet shop. In most cases (NOT ALL) it will be a lone, skinny corpse in no time. A lot of research and the willingness to pay for something decent can go a long way towards keeping you from unbelievable heartache. I know some will disagree and have the ending to the story, but percentage wise the tale is turns out badly. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide. For those of us who are fortunate enough to have happy, fat, healthy uros we can only hope you will find the same.

#1 how big of a cage do they need

They need a cage that is at least 4 times as long as them and 4 times as wide as them.

#2 are they good starters

Like what was said before leopard geckos and bearded dragons are probably the best starter lizards that are out there. Uros are what some would say "intermediate".

# 3 are they tame

It depends on the lizard. Most are tame, but only after some work, others are very flighty and run away. But I have never heard of a Uro biting anyone, there is one exeption though, and that is if they mistake you for food.

#4 do they like to be held

Again it totally depends on the lizard. I have heard that some Uros actually enjoy being held and fall asleep in your hands, others will run away right once you put them down.
