would it be ok to use mulch as substrate as long as its not cypress. I got some for this spring but there will be some left over.
Just wondering

i would not use the mulch beacause they harbor bugs and bacteria. i would stick to aspen, reptibark, or newspaper.

I'm not sure why you're steering clear of cypress mulch. I've been using it for years in my moisture boxes. If you buy quality stuff, it's harmless.
As a general substrate, however, I agree that it would be a bit messy. Aspen is somewhat cleaner, although a lot dryer.
Here's an idea ... why not use newspaper for your cage substrate and make a moisture hide (small Rubbermaid will do) with lightly-moistened mulch in it).
Experiment, and you'll find what works best for you.
Good luck!

oops did i type cypress, i ment pine, or what ever else is toxic. The reason i was thinking about it was because i kinda want a more natural looking cage, and i had some mulch that i just got and was wondering if it was safe to use. I never thought of the mess though, good point. Mabe ill just get some reptile bark, or wood shavings.
thanx
