Why? WHY?

Why the hell arent the barkers and clarks producing weirder animals? Of all the things...albino retic. Big deal.
Youd think those dudes (especially barkers) would be specifically working with Papauns, Moluccans, Boelens, Timors, or any other extremely difficult to breed python(s). Why am I always seeing the latest morph? I would KILL (literally KILL) to be able to buy a baby boelen, or a baby timor. That would be tons more exciting than the latest morph craze. Damn

i hate to answer this for the barkers since i dont know their entire collection, but, according the their site, theyve finished up their work with the larger pythons. theyve bred all but moluccans, boelens (i could be wrong, but my memory isnt that bad) and halmahera pythons. most to atleast the second generation. they pioneered with scrubs, bloods, timors, and quite a few other snakes, both before and after they were married. but to answer your question, they dont work with them because they want to focus on other pythons, boas, and colubrids. but they did have one of if not the largest and most diverse collections of snakes in the world, can you name any other 2 people that have bred all but 3 species of python? i cant help with bob clark tho, im a scrub python kinda guy and he just doesnt do scrubs.

Well, let's see.....can't speak for them directly, but what if they already bred all of those, and are actually breeding the animals that they really want to breed (what a novel idea!). Why don't YOU give up a good portion of your life (and finances) and start trying some of these projects....and if (a big IF) and when you are successful, we can all applaud and say "atta boy!". As for the big deal with the albino retics, just ask the many breeders that have profited off this beautiful species (I don't personally have one) and they will tell you how big of a deal they are!! And as for the Barker's projects, let's just say "drool, drool"....I would give my left, well, let's just say they obviously have a most impressive and beautiful collection (as I am sure Clark's as well...just haven't seen his). Cheers and don't wait for those big breeders to make you happy.....get going on some of those breeding projects with the species you are interested in and hopefully others will find what you are doing to be a big deal some day, but if they don't, please do not despair as hopefully you picked the species that you found to be very enjoyable to work with (no matter what others think!).

Check out his web site. He does Papuans and Olives among others.

I posed this question to David Barker a while back and his reply was (paraphrased) that hobbyists should focus on the "domestication" of our reptiles and not appear to be working with "wild" ones. I don't entirely agree, but I think it's an opinion that merits serious consideration.

Another reason why the more well known breeders don't work with really rare stuff is that the really rare stuff isn't as commercially viable. I'm not at all saying they're greedy. They just need to make a living and they're doing it selling stuff people want.

I'm with you on where the hobby is more interesting. I'd take a healthy Boelens, Papuan or Western Olive Python over almost ANY morph, albino or whatever. But working with the rarer species is much more risky if you NEED to make a living from it.

So many advances have been made in the hobby/herpetoculture. It won't be long before someone unlocks the secrets to reliable breeding of some of the rarities. Do some searches on Kingsnake.com and on the web in general and you'll find a few dedicated folks working with all the species you named.

Good luck...

I guess that makes as much sense as it could, for them (breeders). But if I had the cash that barkers and clarks have Id be doing both. Specifically Boelens and Timors- they would DEFINITELY be appealing to buyers. Give me a break. Its like MTV- the only reason that stuff is so cool (its not) is because MTV tells you its cool. So the kids go for it.
If the barkers said Boelens are the next big thing then Im sure a bunch of snake enthusiasts would jump on it. Including a Timor or a Moluccan. Morphs are cool, dont get me wrong. But cmon

I don't think many kids are getting the morphs these guys are producing,C'Mon. Ten large for a pied, you are talking about some rich kids.

If you think the snakes you like are desireable then start producing them. If you are right you could make a living, or at least support your hobby doing what you love.
