Adult Male Red Tegu pics

MrSickle Jun 08, 2003 08:41 AM

I'm thinking I'm going to purchase a baby male red tegu. Although, I've been trying to find some pics/feedback/postings of people with them, and they seem to be rare. There's only 2 pics I've seen of the males that were large (the pic on bluetegu.com and someone named Juan in the photogallery had a good pic, but it looked as though it was in the middle of shedding and didn't look that attractive, but the size was nice) The other pics of what people called "large males" that were 2-3 years old didn't look much bigger than my Argentine B&W @ 41". Do most of them get up to 20lbs? I'd like to see some more pics of some LARGE adult males if anyone has some. I was going to get another monitor, but seeing how much I like my B&W, I think I'll get a red (especially since it's supposed to be more massive than the B&W's)

Thanks

Excellent! Thank you! How long is he and how much does he weigh? I got my Chacoan from Ron and Stella, and that's where I plan on getting my red if they have any left.

Hi again,
Jr. is a 21 month old Argentine Red Tegu, about 44 inches long and 10 pounds.

How old is your 41" B&W? Is yours male or female? I think another foot of length would make a "big" difference. Mine is about 3 1/2' long too and he's a little more then 1/3rd the weight of Santiegos 4' 2"- and 16 lbs. Maybe in your case you really should consider a monitor, I just don't think there's that much difference between B&Ws and reds.

Oh I see that you said you already had a monitor. I thought that you just wanted a bigger lizard, sorry. After reading it again I get the impression you want a bigger tegu and where wondering if reds get to 20 pounds on average. I can't help you out there.

It's a male, and I'm pretty sure is was hatched in June of last year. He was 14" when I got him in the middle of July last year. I'm not sure how much mine weighs, I have no scales to weigh him. The monitors I want just require too big of cages that I have no room for at the moment. I'm going to save up and get a couple of 72x36x18 cages from CagesByDesign, and stack them. If I get a red male, eventually I want to get a blue female and "attempt" to breed them. When I first got into lizards, I was just attracted by their size, now I like their personality

This is a photo of one of the nicest Red Tegu males I've ever seen. This photo was taken at the Tinley Park Expo in fall, 2001. That Tegu is in a 6 foot Neodesha and took up most of the length. I don't have any stats on him but he was HUGE and had magnificent color. He's the sire of my red female.
