Breeding Blue jeans Pumilio?

mjcadawg Feb 06, 2004 11:32 PM

I was informed today by a guy at a local exotic pet shop that breeding of blue jeans pumilio is impossible in captivity. I knew that it was hard to raise the tadpoles, but he told me that the tadpoles were toxic to the parents, and it'll kill your male. I wanted to clarify if this is true or not. i have NEVER heard of this, but thought it could happen, since there are some crazy things out there in nature. Does anyone have experience with blue jeans? I'd appreciate the replies

Blue Jean Pumilio breed like any other morph, the most difficult thing these days is acquiring a pair. I know of several people that have bred them but like mantellas at one time there were so many WC animals imoported and sold at reasonable prices not many people attempted to work with them. Also most of these WC imports were handled so poorly that most did not survive, truely unfortunate considering they have not been brought in for at least a couple of years. Perhaps your local "expert" should stick with Iguanas and bearded dragons.

Blue jeans have been imported more recently than a few years ago. There was at least one shipment that came in last spring, as some suppliers were selling them at $25 each. I would have bought them out, but really did not feel like I had the expertise to handle these guys in a WC state, and I thought more experienced breeders would be better suited to obtain stock.

It turns out that the blue jeans have been more difficult to get to breed in captivity with any sort of consistency. Of course, once a dedicated hobbyist or two gets a prolific line going, that should not be a problem. I have to agree with Mark, though--your expert at the pet store is full of BS. I know a few people who have had some limited luck with these little guys.

Awesome-- thanks for the replies. I had a feeling that it was bogus, since i've been reading up on darts since i was 12, and have NEVER heard of that.

Great looking frogs Ben!! They look so awesome on that piece of wood in a little pack. Just to add to this discussion on the blue jeans breeding, I have heard that they are very prolific and lay regular clutches. It's the parental care that they fail at as the females often neglect to feed their offspring. There was a discussion on this on Frognet not too long ago, if I'm not mistaken. Once you get some babies for sale, get ahold of me as I may have some retics to trade by next spring....if I manage to pair off the 2 that I bought from Sean S.

Nice frogs-- could you enlighten me on how you manage the blue jeans? Like falconblade said, the parental care is lacking, and since they are eggfeeders... what do you do? Thanks

I know the guy who is breeding them but,as I understand it, won't sell any until he has a few more pairs going. No waiting list going either so,like everything else in this hobby, patience is a virtue.

I'm asking how he actually is successful with the blue jeans rearing. how he raises the tads since they are egg feeders and they lack in parental care.

bgreen Feb 07, 2004 05:36 PM

As Mark said, these are a produced by a friend of mine.
The orginal breeders are keep in a trio 1.2 and they do all the rearing. But they don't reproduce in great numbers. Most people I know have have blue jeans, keep them in pairs and in 10 gallon tanks. I think most of these frogs egg-feeders and thumnails need more room. Yes, some people can get them to reproduce in these small tanks, but the frogs are known as difficult breeders, and this brings up awhole other topic.
