Fimbriatus v. Henkeli

denean Feb 07, 2004 12:42 AM

Hi all, I was reading the posts on Fimbriatus/Henkeli identifacation and was wondering if all Fimbriatus have striped eyes? My female dosen't seem to exibit this trait. Niether of them have fringe in their "armpits" or on the posterior side their upper front legs, but the finge stops almost at the armpit.I can't really compare the tails because it seems my male may not have the same tail he started out with. Either that or he had used up all the fat stores in it because it is quite thin at the edges and curled. In the few weeks I haved owned him the center of his tail is begining to plump up a bit and is uncurling. I want to get some pics of them up tomorrow to help with figuring if they are both Fimbriatus or not. I am greatful for any and all help with this.

you can usually see the difference between, the way they are holding it, as opposed to it kind of looking curled.

But you said since you have had him it has plumped out,(his tail) so you must be giving him more water then he had before.

Yeah, looking forward to your pics, nice to see all you fellow uro keepers posting pics. Makes it more FUN !

Well, it's starting to look better, but it has a ways to go. I mist the walls twice a day and we also have a date with a dropper once a day.It also looks like it was stolen from another Fimbri!I am guessing he dropped it. If anyone has any pic's of what a regen tail looks like, I would love it. I have seen plenty in other lizards, but none in uros. His just doesn't look like OME to me.
Thanks Eve- Denean

There are some Uroplatus that are likely fimbriatus morphs or undescribed subspecies that do not have striped eyes. They are not common in North American collections. One large morph is referred to as the "white-eyed fimbriatus".

Animals of the fimbriatus complex (fimbriatus, henkeli, sikorae) that do vot have the fringe extending into the armpit are probably sikorae. The fringe starts to taper off noticeably at about the place where the forelegs are folded back against the body when the geckos are sleeping. There is more size variation in sikorae than you might expect, they can approach or exceed 8 inches TL. This may be due to geographic variation, or there may be undescribed subspecies.U. s. sameiti is also larger than the average sikorae.

both of my uros have dermal fringe that stops at the point where the leg meets the body. From the crook of the armpit down to almost the elbow on the tricep (using human terms) side of the arm there is no fringe. The white-eyed morph sounds really neat. Thanks for looking Neil. The article in Jan.Reptiles was great I'm sure you've heard this enough but I'm new here.-Denean
