eating mice tail-first... why?

ginevive Feb 07, 2004 06:54 AM

My little '03 girl was eating a fresh-killed mouse last night, but she ate it tail-end first. I looked in, and she had it about halfway down, so I just watched, and she got it down finally.
Unlike most snakes, she doesn't go for the head, she sometimes tries grabbing the mouse by its side. Then she finds this impossible, and grabs it by the butt end. Is this common? She is an extremely shy little girl, and I do not want to intervene on her feeding, so I guess I'll let her eat it however she wants...?

Both of my snakes grab a mouse by the tail from time to time. Once it's dead, it doesn't matter much. Sure, head first goes down easier, but everyone needs a challenge from time to time.

I've seen my bp start in the middle and spend fifteen minutes "mouthing it" until it finally made it around to the end.

It's definitely not something to worry about. It happens from time to time and it won't hurt the snake at all. Once it eats head first a few times, it will get used to eating that way. Don't worry.
