mealies in dish issue

jananicole66 Feb 07, 2004 07:09 AM

Hey. Aries has started to love mealies, which pleases me, i am tired of crickets and their pooping everwheres.
Anyways
She will eat them readily if I drop them in front of her and they start crawling around.
But, when i have them in a dish, she doesnt eat them. She knows they are there because I showed her them, by tilting the dish sideways in front of her, and i knew she saw them cause her eyes zeroed in & her pulse/breathing accelerated as it does when she spots food. But i have left some in there over several nights and she doesnt eat them, but when i take the dish out, and drop one in front of her, she'll gobble it up. Any ideas what to do? I dont mind feeding her a couple times an evening, by hand, i am just wondering why she doensnt eat them in the dish, when she knows they are there!

She likes to hunt. My leo won't eat anything not moving around, if she can't chase it she won't eat it.

yea i figured that was it. But i find crix are more annoying than anything, especially if she tries to catch one adn misses a few times, she gets frustrated and goes back to bed lol . so i like how mealies can't hop from one end to the other.
oh well i dont mind standing an droppin them in one by one

The best way to feed crickets to leos in my opinion is to take out all the cage furniture then feed them. Of course that is the only way my leo will eat anything.

well she originally at crix but lately she has not been eating them and eating mealies instead. I dont really want crix anymore because i find they keep dying on me, and also cause they poop all in her cage and plus it takes her forever to eat them.. so i dont want to take out all her cage stuff, since it takes all nite for her to eat them all, and well thats when shes awake & likes to climb and everything.
I dont mind taking the time to sit and feed her mealies though, whatever makes her happy

how big is your cage?
my leo is in a 10 gallon and when i take out all the cage furniture can eat as many insects as will make her full. Also when you take the cage furniture out i think you get a better feeding response. It's pretty funny to watch your leo just chase the crix/mealies around the cage.

You should probably stop hand feeding her for a few days and just leaving the bowl with mealies in.
The mealie bowl should be about the height of her legs so she can actually eat from it. Ussually the lower it is while not letting the mealies escape the easier it is for the leo to eat from it.
Also is youre dish see-through??? IF not try using a deli cup, just cut it downm it work good for me.

How many mealies are you putting in there at a time? My leos doesnt touch them unless there is at least 20 in a bowl. I am not sure why, but I think they see more movement or something. Well I hope this helps!!
