Vines? Wood?

weecritters Feb 07, 2004 08:27 AM

Me and my wife got a water dragon and thought we'd give our little girl something to climb on, well we found a big chuck of grape vine (looks kinda like drift wood, but the tag said grape vine) at a pet shop, we paid $21 for it, I guess it was worth it, anyway I found some grape vine around our home which looks awesome and was wondering how to maybe cure it? anyhow, does anyone know how to get grape vine and other types of wood ready for a reptile setup?

There are a few ways to cure grape vine...
If it is small enough put it in the oven at about 250 for an hour or so... Or soak it in a water bleach solution for a few days, or plunge it into a tub of boiling water for a while... that will dry it out and get rid of the nasty stuff that could be living in it...

Thanks! would I need to take a knife and scrape the outside of the vine? Also I don't know what kind of vine it is but I've seen some realy nice long vines growing in trees. Do you think they would be ok? I guess what I'm trying to ask is, is all vines ok if cured or are there only certian types, that can be used. Sorry about all the questions, its just I want to take the best possible care of all my animals, and I'm thinking about getting a few more water dragons, so I'll need a bigger cage plus more vines.

Thanks again!

soak your vines in the bath tub with a little bleach, use a firm wire brush to clean it, that is all I've ever done and I've never had a problem. Although I've read that some claim to have had problems with harvested wood, I question weather this speculation or factual. I suspect the problems are due to a pre existing condition. I personaly have never purchased wood from a pet store/never will either. Sand blasting is another option as well, if you have acess to a unit. That is how the industry prepares the majority of the wood available at the stores. Goodluck.
