humid hide???

irish_eyes113 Feb 07, 2004 11:45 AM

Hello all. I was just wondering if anyone could give me instructionson making a simple humid hide for my girl leo. I already have the vermiculite and a container. Could you just teel me how to set it up so it will be accessible to my girl. I had several infertile eggs last year, and ant to start out on the right path this time. Thanks in advance

I just cut a hole on the lid of the container big enough for the Leo to crawl in, and I add water to the vermiculite until its damp but not soaking which means if you were to sqweeze it no water drips out. Thats pretty much all there is to it. If you plan on breeding your Leo the hide can be used as a nestbox also. In that case I would put a damp paper towel on the bottom so that if she lays eggs they won't stick to the plastic bottom. That was a great suggestion someone here told me (Thank you) after I had that type of problem. Good luck!

Thank you! One question...this may sound silly but will she be able to crawl on top of the container? It is about Three inches high. just wondering

thanks, Jenn

well if you think its too high, you could cut a hole in the side...
thats what it is like with mine, cause she was really tiny when i got her. So her hides are a hlaf coconut shell, wiht an arc on the side, and a plastic reptile cave, also opens on the side.. both have been fine for me!

yeah she will be able to get up there and don't be surprised if they all climb in there.. you said your eggs were infertile..maybe the male or the female is not old enough yet.. the reason you put the hole in the top of the container as opposed to a hole in the side is to keep the dirt inside the box.. i learned from experience.. one of my geckos kicked nearly akll the dirt outside of the hidebox..

i use vermiculite and love it. Just remember the pull any extra crickets out. Two reasons
#1 if the crickets go in the hide leos eat then ane some vermic.
#2 crickets will lay eggs in the hide.
I like to put my humid/breeder box on top of the under tank heat pador touching my heat rock. Bryan

I only know 3 ways to do things.
The right way.
The wrong way.
And my way which is the wrong way only faster.
