eggs..temps/humidity/when will they hatch, etc??? please help today

duffy Jun 08, 2003 09:39 AM

An Ohio snapper was laying her eggs today right by a busy road.
I stood by for an hour making sure she did not get run over. The location is a deathtrap for the emerging young, so I collected them and will incubate. I actually have a nice pond where the babies can live.
What temps do I need? Humidity? How long do N. Snappers take to hatch? Should I rebury the eggs by my pond, or are they at great risk for, say, a raccoon digging them up? Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated.
PS... As a rule, I do not interfere with nature in such a way.
I keep snakes, and will probably breed next year, so I am already thinking in terms of incubating eggs. This is just an unexpected "rescue and relocate" mission. My pond is just a few hundred yards from the culvert that the turtle came from, and the stream runs right by the pond. Thanks. Duffy

What are the chances that a large snapper would be laying these eggs if she had not had a chance to mate? In other words, what are the odds that these eggs are not even fertile? They are perfectly round, hard, white eggs. After a few weeks should I hold a few up to a strong light to see if a turt is developing?
Again, thanks in advance for your help. Duffy

Hey, good move, I'm sure it was the best thing to do. As for the eggs, I'm pretty sure they are fertile. Refer to the link, it should answer your questions.

Snapper

...Hopefully I will let you know in August that I have baby snappers. I plan to release most of them into my pond and also the stream that they came from. Thanks again. Duffy

Not!! LOL they are so common over here I can just go in a lake/pond and pick one up. They are cute little buggers when their smalle, but beware, they eat you out of house & Home. Very rewarding pets. I'd suggest you keep one or two whenthey hatch out and keep them in a pool or pond you make yourself. I made a pond out of Tarp that went down 6 feet and had 3 feet sand so 9 feet total. I had a couple painters in it and they survived all year long year after year. But I have long sinced moved away and the turtles where relocated back to their original ponds.

P.S. Best of luck!
